Between decks each small box on the port and starboard side shows a berth, or bed and personal space, with sections which might have been for single men at one end, families in the middle, and single women at the other end. Down the middle is the dining or living area. Steerage berths typically might have two tiers along each side, six feet long, eighteen inches wide.
