The Fitzgerald’s at sea
James Edward Fitzgerald met members of the Canterbury Association when he was secretary to the Society for the Reform of Colonial Government and sailed in September 1850 aboard the Charlotte Jane with his wife Fanny. He was to become Canterbury’s first Provincial Superintendent. The Fitzgerald's had one of the after cabin's near the poop. It was 9 feet 6 inches by 11 feet and had the luxury of its own water closet, although the stiff crinoline skirts which were fashionable at the time would have made access to the tiny space difficult. Nevertheless, the cabin was comfortable compared to the steerage conditions. The layout of the cabin can be seen in the Plan below of the first class accommodation on board the Charlotte Jane.
